Regarding lenses, in addition to focal length, there are bokeh considerations, for example, 1.4 bokeh is definitely better than 1.8.
Regarding fill light, there are many one-light masters out there as well, though obviously dual and triple lights are more suitable for novice beginners. But for one-light photography, dual-light is a much more portable and manageable combination.
On a final note, ambient light is your extra light.
